八女石灯籠は、自らが物語を語る特別な石で作られています。

Born from fire, shaped by time, illuminated by craftsmanship.
Yame stone lanterns are made from a special stone that tells its own story.

🪨 約9万年前のスーパー噴火で誕生した特別な石

材料は、約9万年前の阿蘇火山の第四次巨大噴火で生まれた暗色の溶結凝灰岩です。
軽量で耐寒性があり、時間とともに古美な風合いをまといます。
世界中でもこの石は九州にしか存在しない、希少な自然素材です。
現在、日本でも数か所でしか採掘されていません。

A rare stone from a super-eruption 90,000 years ago.
This dark ignimbrite was created during the fourth super-eruption of Mount Aso around 90,000 years ago.
It is light, frost-resistant, and quickly develops an antique patina over time.
This rare natural stone is found only on Kyūshū and is now quarried in just a few regions of Japan.

🏯 石と生きる——古墳時代からの文化

八女では1500年以上前の古墳時代から石材が使われており、
石棺や石室などにその歴史が見られます。
石灯籠としては、1682年の現存例があり、400年以上の歴史を物語っています。
最盛期には60以上の石工がいましたが、今では10～12軒しか残っていません。

Living with stone – since the Kofun period.
Stone has been used in Yame since the Kofun period (over 1,500 years ago),
as seen in ancient tomb chambers and stone coffins.
The oldest surviving stone lantern dates back to 1682, marking over 400 years of tradition.
While there were once more than 60 stonemason workshops, today only around 10–12 remain.

八女石灯籠は日本国内の寺社や庭園だけでなく、
今では海外のアートプロジェクトや本格的な庭園にも広がっています。
コレクターや造園家、アーティストから高く評価され、
日本の本物の職人技として世界的に注目されています。

Yame stone lanterns are internationally admired.
Today, they are found not only in Japanese temples and gardens,
but also in international art projects and sophisticated garden landscapes.
They are highly regarded by collectors, landscape designers, and artists worldwide
as authentic examples of Japanese craftsmanship.

🧱 ドイツから八女へ——サンドロの歩み

ドイツ出身の石工マイスター、サンドロ・モリッツは幼少期から石に魅了され、
1995年、学生時代に石工の世界に出会いました。1999年から2002年にかけて
フランクフルトで石工としての修業を積み、2007年には「バイエルン州マイスター賞」を受賞しました。

フランクフルトおよびベルリンではマイスターとして活動し、ベルリンにて石工工房の立ち上げも担当しました。 その後もヨーロッパで日本の石灯籠を広める活動を展開してきました。

2003年から2005年には日本に留学し、八女で石灯籠制作の技術を学びました。
2022年には再び日本へ移住し、2024年より「八女市地域おこし協力隊」として活動を開始。
現在は「サンちゃん石工房」にて、伝統と革新を融合させた石灯籠の制作に励んでいます。

From Germany to Yame – The path of Sandro Moritz
Born in Germany near Berlin, stonemason master Sandro Moritz has been fascinated by stones since early childhood.
He discovered the craft in 1995 and trained as a stonemason in Frankfurt from 1999 to 2002.
In 2007, he was awarded the Bavarian Master Prize for his exceptional skills.

He worked as a master in Frankfurt and Berlin and was responsible for establishing a stonemasonry workshop in Berlin.
He has been actively promoting Japanese stone lanterns across Europe.

From 2003 to 2005, Sandro studied in Japan and trained in traditional stone lantern making in Yame.
In 2022, he returned to Japan, and since 2024, he has been a member of the Yame City Chiiki Okoshi Cooperation Team.
Today, he runs the "San-chan Stone Workshop," where he blends tradition and innovation in his work.
